"Art . . . is not relegated to the art
gallery, it is not relegated to a
particular place, it is a part of your
life itself, part of your home. Your
home is the centre of beauty, the
centre of culture, and the centre of
art as well. There is no difference
between all these..."
- RUKMINI DEVI
In the course of her life, which
coincided with the cultural and
artistic awakening of India,
Rukmini Devi gathered a peroneal collection of
sculptures, textiles, paintings and
objects in brass. Among her
treasures were objects
of everyday art, which had been
part of her own daily life. She
wanted to make her collection
available to the students of
Kalakshetra and to the public in a
museum located within the
Kalakshetra campus, because as
she said, "Neither lectures nor
advice helps as much as
continuous familiarity with the
beautiful..."
The Rukmini Devi Museum houses
rare bronze icons, objects in
brass, glassware and ceramics,
wooden sculpture, paintings
and textiles. Many of these were
given as gifts to Rukmini Devi by
friends and admirers from all over the world. MORE >
