The CERC offers a short term and long term
course in Kalamkari, the art of painting on
textiles using natural dyes. Training is
headed by a traditional craftsman from
Srikalahasti, one of the last remaining
centers of Kalamkari work.
Note: Course material and Dyes will be
charged at actuals. A 10% discount will be
given to students or staff of the Kalakshetra
Foundation. |

Syllabus
MONTH ONE:
• Drawing of decorative borders and motifs in the
Kalamkari tradition
• Preparation of "Kassim" (basic black dye for outline
drawing)
• Preparation of Charcoal sticks for sketching on cloth
• Drawing of human figures "parivara devatas,"
"vahanas," and other mythological figures
• Preparation of the Kalam (pen used for drawing with
dyes)
• Drawing of designs with black dye and traditional
methods of filling, hatching, etc.
MONTH TWO:
• Drawing of Gods and Goddesses of the Hindu
pantheon with appropriate attributes
• Preparation of the Mordant solution and application
on cloth
• Washing and dyeing in vat for developing red color
• Painting of large pictures and story panels
• Dunging and application of other vegetable dyes for
different colors
• Post treatment and traditional methods of bleaching
and finishing of pictures |
